Israel Hernandez
Volunteer Activity: Evening Language Program and Special Events
Origin: Mexico
“Volunteering in the language program gives me the opportunity to interact with both cultures, Hispanic and American. It feels great knowing that with a little bit of effort, we can help others and make a difference in the community and in people’s lives by sharing our time and knowledge.”
Melba Fiorentino
Volunteer Activity: Senior Program
Origin: Puerto Rico
Profession: Retired Anesthesiologist
“My experience with the seniors at the LAA has been very gratifying. They are in much need of help and care, mainly because of their difficulty in communicating in the English language. Because of their age they cannot get around by themselves, therefore they are alone most of the time and they feel lonely and depressed. I think they need support to make them feel somebody cares. I feel committed to reach out to the seniors and help as much as I can.”
Beatriz Pita
Volunteer Activity: Special Projects/Professional Skill/Norcross Outreach Center Construction
Origin: Argentina
“I chose to volunteer at the LAA because I am interested in helping the Latino population become better assimilated into the U.S. culture and customs, so that they can get ahead and have a better future. At this stage in my life it was important for me to feel that I was giving back to the community, and the LAA was the organization that focused on that particular segment of the community.”
Philip Alequin Jr.
Volunteer Activity: Corporate Affinity Group Representative
Origin: Puerto Rico
Profession: TurnerUNO at Turner Broadcasting
“Our commitment to the LAA and its’ community outreach programs is what keeps bringing our volunteers back. Nothing is more important to us than knowing that our volunteers enjoy the aspect of giving back to the community. And we can see that in their smiles after three arduous hours of painting, landscaping and cleaning at the LAA Headquarters during Turner Volunteer Day.”
Diana Cirgenski
Volunteer Activity: Youth Programs
Origin: Cuba
Profession: AT&T
“The LAA touches the community in many different ways, so there are many different types of activities to participate in. The LAA makes it easy to volunteer by sending out every opportunity by email and letting me decide which ones I have time or desire to do.”
Anne Callison
Volunteer Activity: Summer Youth Program
Origin: United States
Profession: ESL Teacher
“My summer working the LAA left an indelible impression on me and on my approach to teaching English as a second language. I was inspired that the LAA as an organization is so wholly dedicated to seeing the children in the youth program succeed, not merely in the classroom, but more importantly, in life. I am thankful that, for one summer, I had the chance to be a part of that process.”
Romeisha Carr
Volunteer Activity: Internship
Origin: United States
Profession: Student at Spelman College majoring in Spanish
“This internship experience changed me by allowing me the opportunity to experience a different side of my Spanish major that would have been unavailable through only classroom lectures. I had first-hand experience interacting with the Hispanic community in Atlanta. I feel like in some way I have helped change their lives by just being there during this experience.”
