About Mami y Yo

Mami y Yo (Mommy and Me) is an early literacy program geared toward children ages birth to four to ensure that Latino preschoolers are ready for school. Through fun and interactive classes, the program supports parents and other family members to be their children’s first teachers. At an early age children learn the skills needed to get along with classmates, excel in reading, and get ahead in school.  Activities focus on helping parents use Latino traditions and stories to teach reading, numbers, shapes and colors, and help children develop motor and social skills.

Parents learn creative and fun ways to work at home with their children, preparing them for reading, entering the school system, and interacting with their peers.  Through the program, parents deepen their understanding of the physical, emotional, and cognitive development of their children, and gain tools to help them assume the role of their child’s first teacher.

Because developing literacy skills in any language creates a positive foundation for school, Mami y Yo is based in an in-culture approach, with a mix of reading and activities in both English and Spanish.  In the spring of 2008, Mami y Yo incorporated Scholastic’s Lee y Sers (Read and You Will Be) “Family Conversations” as part of its curriculum. Grounded in a Latino cultural context, the program acknowledges, highlights, and values the rich practices contained in Latino heritage.
